Risks > What happend?

On Monday 5th September a laptop upon being plugged
into a socket for use was reported to have been sparking.
The charger had been issued by IT 3 months ago and was
compatible with the laptop.
The charger had been safely used and disconnected from
mains power at the end of each working day and had no
other defects or concerns had been raised.
Other incidents similar to this which included a small fire at
the Hinckley Connection project have been reported over
the last few months.

Measures > What must you do?

What you need to do now:
When using laptop chargers please:

  • Ensure batteries, chargers and devices are compatible
  • Only use company approved, PAT tested electrical equipment. If you need a replacement charger, source it via a company approved provider
  • Charge equipment on a clean, flat surface, away from combustible materials
  • Ensure equipment is not left unattended whilst charging, switch off at the mains and remove the plug from its socket
  • Store your equipment in a dry, safe place in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
  • Regularly visually inspect batteries, chargers and equipment for signs of wear or defects, such as damage to casing, leaks or signs of overheating such as scorch mark
  • Keep batteries out of direct sunlight and away from flammables
  • Avoid overloading of extension power blocks
